Map of street art in Strasbourg (France)
Street art took root slowly in the Alsatian capital, where city authorities long enforced a strict anti-graffiti policy. Early pioneers such as Jaek El Diablo began painting walls in the 1990s, and Dan23 followed in the 2000s with hundreds of colourful, activist-tinged pieces. The turning point came in early 2016, when the municipality reversed course and started granting artists permission to paint electrical cabinets and selected facades, opening the door to a rapidly growing urban art scene.
The Krutenau district is the densest hub, home to many works produced through the COLORS City initiative. Near the train station, murals blend contemporary styles with nods to local history, and the rue du Jeu des Enfants has been partly transformed by its own residents. Along the industrial docks of Port du Rhin, large-scale graffiti covers warehouse walls, while smaller pieces dot the quai des Pêcheurs, rue Déserte, and pont Saint-Thomas across the old town.
Dan23 stands as the most prolific figure, with an estimated 200 to 300 works painted in the city centre alone. Other notable names include Pro176, Stom500, Missy, and Monsieur Chat. Each autumn the COLORS contemporary urban art festival, backed by the Eurometropolis, brings international artists to create large-scale murals. Institutional recognition peaked in 2018 when New York duo FAILE covered over 1,000 square metres of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, signalling a city now fully embracing art on its walls.
