Where to find street art in Pessac (France)
The story began in 1998 when the Vibrations Urbaines festival was launched as one of France's earliest events dedicated to urban culture. Initially focused on breakdancing, skateboarding and BMX, the festival introduced street art to its programme in 2002. Each autumn edition has since brought international artists to paint the walls of this Bordeaux suburb, steadily building an open-air gallery that now spans several decades of urban creation.
Artworks are clustered around distinct areas. The Bellegrave district, home to the skatepark and sports hall, forms the historical heart of the collection. On the university campus, the Esplanade des Antilles and Allée Maine Biran feature large-scale murals by artists such as Zest and the Collectif Transfert. Downtown streets including Avenue Pasteur and Rue Nelson Mandela offer a walkable route mixing figurative portraits and abstract compositions.
In 2017, the QR20 trail was created to mark the festival's twentieth anniversary, linking around fifty works via QR codes that reveal each piece's story and creator. Notable contributors include Speedy Graphito, Okuda, Leon Keer, Monkey Bird and Jean Rooble. The DécouVR' Pessac app extends the experience with a geolocated 8.2-kilometre cycling circuit through the Bourgailh, Saige and campus neighbourhoods, making the city's outdoor gallery easy to explore at one's own pace.
