Map of street art in Issé (France)

Street art arrived in this small Loire-Atlantique commune in the early 2010s through an ambitious rural arts initiative led by the Châteaubriant-Derval intermunicipal authority. The Nantes-based Collectif 100Pression — five artists with two decades of experience in graffiti and mural painting — was commissioned to create an outdoor art trail connecting several villages across the Pays de La Mée countryside. Drawing on local archives and collective memory, their work brought contemporary urban art to a territory better known for its forges and farmland.

Murals are concentrated around the Grande Rue and Rue de l'Industrie, in the historic centre along the river Don. Artists including Persu, Smoka and Lélé produced large-scale compositions referencing the town's industrial heritage, from its iron-age forges to the plastics factory that once employed over 700 workers. The trail extends to neighbouring villages such as Jans, Lusanger and Saint-Vincent-des-Landes, creating a cross-municipal walking route.

The project stands out for its participatory approach. Workshops involving residents and schoolchildren regularly add new pieces, keeping the trail alive. The Châteaubriant tourism office provides a downloadable map for self-guided visits, making it one of the few structured rural street art circuits in western France.
