Where to find street art in Berlin (Germany)

In the 1960s, graffiti began appearing on the walls of West Berlin, brought by young writers with ties to the New York scene. The Wall, built in 1961, became the defining canvas: Thierry Noir was the first artist to paint it systematically, from the mid-1980s onward. When it fell in 1989, 118 artists from 21 countries painted 1,316 metres of its eastern face, creating the East Side Gallery — one of the largest open-air galleries in the world.

Kreuzberg remains the political heart of the street art scene, its Oranienstraße and Kottbusser Tor lined with murals reflecting the neighbourhood's activist history. Across the Spree, Friedrichshain's RAW-Gelände — a former railway yard — offers constantly rotating walls. In Mitte, the Haus Schwarzenberg displays decades of layered work; Schöneberg hosts the Urban Nation museum, dedicated to urban art.

Artists such as Alice Pasquini and Cranio have strengthened the city's international reputation. The Berlin Mural Fest and Urban Nation's ONE WALL project regularly bring international artists for large-scale commissions. Guided street art tours now cover four decades of layered creativity across the eastern and western districts.
